“Courage and Strength”

Today’s Gospel continues the message of Jesus sending his disciples to preach the Good News.   How would you feel if your parents wanted to send you to a strange country to tell the children there about Jesus.   Would you be afraid to travel alone to a strange country?   The disciples were also afraid of what might happen to them.   They needed courage to leave their families and friends and travel to countries where they were strangers.   When they got there, they had to live as Jesus had taught them and to share his message with the people.   Have you ever felt scared or nervous to stand up in front of a crowd and read to them or say your lines in a school play?   This was also frightening for the apostles.   When the Holy Spirit came at Pentecost to share his courage and strength with the apostles, they changed from being frightened to being brave enough to stand up before the non-believers and tell them that Jesus had risen from the dead.   It wasn’t always easy for them to do this because many did not believe them and chased them out of town.   How do we share the Gospel message today?   We must try to live in the way that Jesus taught us.   The Holy Spirit will give us the same strength and courage that he gave the apostles.   Remember, Jesus told his disciples that he would always be there to protect them.   He is here for us also!

THOUGHTS FOR THIS WEEK

Adults:   Have I ever doubted God’s love for me?   What signs of God’s care can I use to dispel fear?

Children:   What makes me afraid?   How can I remember that God is always with me?

LITURGY LINES…

COMMUNION BOW by Paul Turner

When receiving Holy Communion, the communicant bows his or her head before the Sacrament as a gesture of reverence and receives the Body of the Lord from the minister. … When Holy Communion is received under both kinds, the sign of reverence is also made before receiving the Precious Blood ( General Instruction of the Roman Missal 160).

Communion is the climax of the mass. The Eucharist is the summit, the greatest experience of our life, and it is the source, the origin of all we do and are.   It calls forth our belief in God and our service to the world. As Catholics, we believe that the communion we share is the sacramental presence of Jesus and that Christ remains with us as we go forth to love our neighbor.   At God’s invitation we come to this table with joy, faith and reverence.   As a sign of the reverence we owe this sacrament, each of us bows our head before we receive.   This sign of reverence is similar to the bow of the head made at Mass whenever we say the name of the Jesus.   It differs from the profound bow.   We make a profound bow from the waist when passing by the altar.   We also make a profound bow during the creed at the words “by the power of the Holy Spirit.”   In the past, when approaching communion, some have made a profound bow, a head bow or a genuflection. Others have made the sign of the cross after communion.   For the sake of uniformity, the custom in the United States is now a bow of the head before receiving communion.
